A new home is an opportunity for a lot of things, not least of which is actually making your garage space usable. It’s easy for your garage to turn into your dumping ground for just about anything, but a few simple organization tricks will help ward off the clutter. Get the most out of the garage in your new home with this advice:
Use the Walls
The bulk of the floor space in your garage is supposed to be for your car. For storage space, install a pegboard and hang your gardening tools to keep them out of the way. Boost your storage capacity by adding shelves. As long as you keep a ladder handy, don’t be afraid to build shelving that almost reaches the ceiling. Just be sure that none of your storage interferes with opening and closing the garage door.\
Dedicate a Workspace
If you like doing DIY projects in your garage, carve out a space to do just that. Set up a table and a chair so you have an area to organize all of your supplies. Don’t forget to utilize the wall space over the desk to hang the tools you use most often in your projects. Use a desk lamp for additional task lighting. Don’t let items you use in your projects creep into other parts of the garage.
Choose Storage Bins and Labels
Instead of just placing items on shelves, invest in some storage bins and some labels. Bins allow you to keep clutter contained while they free up additional storage space. Labeling the bins makes it easy to put your hands on what you need. Storage bins are particularly useful for items that only get used occasionally, like holiday decorations.
